Let me tell you a story about my friend – fear.
When in Budapest.
From the time I bought the ticket for the Budapest trip, I started my research on how can I spend quality and relaxing time there.
So every day, I had an energetic and joyful experience by visiting the main and beautiful tourists’ attractions.
“Fear is natural incautious people, and knowing how to conquer it means being brave.” Alonso de Ercilla y Zรบรฑiga
Now, on my second day, I was heading out to visit the Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion & St. Matthias Church, all of the sudden a man approached me on the busiest street in Old Town.
He asked me if I speak English, I thought he needed some help, and I said Yes! …Unexpectedly, I paid close attention to what I felt in that moment – the fight-or-flight reaction kicked in, sensed the imagined danger, everything was spinning in my head and my heart was about to pop up –– all of these for a couple of seconds, to me it felt like ages… Moreover, questions were bursting in my head: “What if he wants to hurt me, what if he wants to rob me?” –– All those what-ifs were not actual events, but something I projected into the future.
You know, when your head is playing cards and gives you what it thinks is good for you, it never is.
It’s always interesting to pay attention to your emotions and become aware of the information that’s subconsciously stored in each one of them.
Every emotion helps us to get to know ourselves because they tell us how we see ourselves, what we like and don’t like, what hurts us and makes us happy, and which situations remind us of past experiences, happy or sad.
Being aware of them will always provide you with valuable information about yourself so that you can work on personal aspects that might be debilitating or unrealistic in relation to the present moment.
We have the power to conquer all of our fears/demons what I like to call them, but instead what I have learned in the past 6 months from my experiments is that:
· It works better for my health to befriend my fears, accept them, maybe forgive them in order to find peace and control over my daily life
· The fear gets much stronger and more resistant to removal
· Sometimes I gave them faces, used extensively my imagination, creativity to draw them as I would like to see their faces and talked to them – helped a lot saying all things that I’m afraid out loud for them to hear me
· When I say that I impersonated them I thought very highly of them because I have yet to respect them, somehow they taught me valuable things
· My AHA moment was when I succeeded to be confident, my performance, productivity was by far enriched and I could focus to my extent
· I’ve moved towards the outskirts of my comfort zone, constantly taking on new challenges and learning new skills both professionally and personal
Now, back to my friend’s story, a hippie–fluff positive scenario happened to me, this man was actually kind, knowledgeable, experienced in the Buddhist religion, yoga, mindfulness, and a healthy lifestyle.
We talked about all these things, and what he actually wanted from me was to offer me a book, instead, he ends up giving me three amazing books and a delicious cookie.
In the end, my fear was only in my head, our thoughts have tremendous power to create our personal universes, so make sure you create a good one!
When we go right at it (and through it), fear can teach us so much about our personal powers and strength. There is no other feeling like the triumph you feel when you realize you did not get defeated when you realize that instead, you actually made or did it!
You succeeded, and even though not every try is perfect, who cares?! You made the leap! This will build your confidence, broaden your comfort zone, and make you play on a whole new level of what is possible!
I always tell myself – It’s OK to feel fear. It only means I’m moving towards becoming even more awesome.
